Cook Inlet Area
Subsistence Fishing

Access

Anchorage-Mat-Su, Kenai Peninsula Nonsubsistence Use Area Map As subsistence fisheries in Cook Inlet occur outside the nonsubsistence use area where major urban centers are located, there are few roads and most fisheries are only accessible by boat. The public is advised to be cautious when accessing these fisheries as Cook Inlet has some of the largest tidal fluctuations in the world, as well as inclement weather. In addition many of these fisheries are located near lands that are privately owned. The Tyonek fishery for example is located on waters adjacent to lands owned by the Native Village of Tyonek. Also many sites have been used by fishers for years if not generations. New fishers are advised to be courteous when accessing a fishery for the first time.
